Fin de Semana de Actuaciones / Weekend for Performances

Este fin de semana retomamos la actividad sociocultural en Isla Cristina después del parón provocado por la Romería del Rocío. Y lo hacemos con la actuación de varios humoristas que se dan cita en un evento que se va a llevar a cabo en el Auditorio del Parque Central el Sábado dia 2 de Junio a partir de las 21:00 horas, con las actuaciones de Toni Rodríguez (ocurrente monologuista gaditano), JJ Vaquero y Vicente Ruidos (también dedicados al arte del monólogo). Es ahora la iniciativa privada la que toma el relevo de las actuaciones del consistorio local, en la que la compañía Contrata Artistas y Bastinazo Producciones promueve un acto de envergadura a medio camino entre el espectáculo más puro y el humor más actual. 

También el día 2 de Junio, Sábado, se celebra en nuestra ciudad el Campeonato Provincial de Fisioculturismo y Fitness, organizado por la Asociación Deportiva MushinDo Gym y Antonio Martín. Este acto comenzará a las 15:00 horas con el pesaje de todos los participantes en el Campeonato, aunque habrá actos desde las 10:00 de la mañana en el Teatro Horacio Noguera de Isla Cristina. Esta actividad deportiva cuenta con el patrocinio de varias empresas isleñas y las asociaciones de Fitness y Culturismo de Andalucia. Es una cita ineludible en una población con tanta y tan arraigada tradición de una disciplina tan malentendida como poco valorada.

En definitiva, es un fin de semana para acercarse por Isla Cristina para disfrutar de los cuerpos escultóricos y de un humor actual, además de todas las atracciones y posibilidades gastronómicas de nuestro pueblo, que no son pocas. Un lugar paradisiaco a orillas del Océano Atlántico, que nos deleita estos días con un clima agradable apto para todos los públicos, y en el que toda la familia puede disfrutar de unos días de relax en tan afable población.

This weekend we retake the sociocultural activity in Isla Cristina, after the stop because of the Rocio Pilgrimage. And we do it with the performance of some humorists who act in an event which is going to be carried out in the Auditorio of the Central Park of our town, on Saturday 2nd June from 21:00 hours onwards, with the performances of Toni Rodríguez (a witty monologuist from Cadiz), JJ Vaquero and Vicente Ruidos (also dedicated to the art of the monologues). It is now private entrepreneurship which takes over the performances of the local Council, in which the companies Contrata Artistas and Bastinazo Productions promote an important act in the middle of the most pure spectacle and the most current humour. 

Also on the 2nd of June, Saturday, the Province Championship of Body-building and Fitness, organized by the Sports Association Mushindo Gym and Antonio Martín. This act will begin at 15:00 hours with the weigh of the contestants in this Championship, though some acts are planned from 10:00 hours in the morning, celebrated in the Theater Horacio Noguera in Isla Cristina. This sports activity has the patronage of some islander companies and associations of Fitness and Body-building of Andalusia. It is an unavoidable meeting in a town with so long and rooted tradition of a discipline as misunderstood as little appreciated.

To sum up, it is a weekend to come to Isla Cristina to enjoy sculptor bodies and present humour, besides all the atractions and gastronomical possibilities of our town, which are not few. A heavenly place at the coast of the Atlantic Ocean, which delights us with warm temperatures for everyone, in which all the family may enjoy some relaxing days in so affable town.

Hasta el 40 de Mayo... / Up to the 40th of May...

Después de tantos vaivenes de temperatura, este fin de semana nos espera un tiempo agradable y acorde con la época en la que estamos. Las subidas y bajadas de temperatura no hacen más que provocar cambios en el clima y en nuestros maltrechos organismos, a través de constipados, alergias, etc. Es por ello que en unos días como hoy y mañana, en los que el ambiente brilla por su ausencia, por el éxodo masivo hacia el Rocío, es cuando debemos aprovechar y salir a relajarnos para pasar un fin de semana sin actividad, en la que el ocio y los eventos socioculturales brillan por su ausencia en una población tan importante en recursos como es Isla Cristina.

Es por ello recomendable recuperar fuerzas y reponerse ante el largo período estival que nos espera este año, lleno de actos y actividades destinadas al turismo, con especial atención a eventos desplazados al verano debido al escaso tirón que tiene en otras épocas, como el Festival de Cortometrajes de Islantilla, que este año se celebra en Agosto, y un gran campeonato de fútbol 7 organizado por el Ayuntamiento junto con el Isla Cristina CF, emulando los grandes campeonatos de otros años. Es un calendario productivo al que se añadirán las tradicionales citas que no pueden faltar en un verano lleno de trasiego de personas y actividades culturales.

After so many ups and downs in temperature, this weekend has a warm climate and appropriate to the period in which we stay. The to and fro of temperature provokes changes in climate and in our battered organisms, through coughs, allergies, etc. That´s why in these days we have to seize the oportunity to go out and relax to spend a weekend with no activity, in which leisure time and the sociocultural events have a real absence in a town so rich in resources as Isla Cristina.

So, it is advisable to get one´s strength back and to recover before the long summer period that´s waiting for us this year, full of events and activities dedicated to tourism, with special attention to moved events to summer, as the Festival of Short Films of Islantilla, which is celebrated in August this year, and a great Football championship organised by the Local Council and Isla Cristina FC, emulating the big championships of past years. It is a productive schedule to which traditional events will be added, so they cannot be missing in a summer full of moving around people and cultural activities.

Isla Cristina sale de Romería/ Isla Cristina goes out for pilgrimage

Como cada año por estas fechas, Isla Cristina se prepara para el camino al Rocío, que cada año va ganando en popularidad, a pesar de que la crisis económica merme la afluencia de romeros desde el principio del camino. Será mañana Lunes cuando los romeros inicien su andadura por los caminos y las arenas de nuestra provincia, en busca de la Blanca Paloma, como los devotos rocieros la llaman. Varias son las carretas que saldrán de la Avenida del Carnaval, para tomar la Calle Roque Barcia y desembocar en la travesía de la Ronda Norte para dejar nuestro pueblo por el puente. Serán 10 días los que estos isleños dejen huérfana a nuestra localidad, algunos saldrán para el Rocío el Viernes para pasar el fin de semana con la Virgen, y los más rezagados harán lo posible para estar allí para la salida de la Virgen, que está prevista para la madrugada del 3 al 4 de Junio. Desde Objetivo Isleño queremos desear a tod@s los romer@s un feliz camino y estancia en la aldea, y que regresen sin novedad, cuál si fueran barcos que salen a la mar. Isla Cristina sets off for the road to El Rocio as every year in these days, a feast growing in importance in our town, despite the economic crisis has reduced the affluence of pilgrims from the beginning of the road. Tomorrow Monday the pilgrims will begin their journey over the roads and sands of our province, in search of the White Dove, this is how they call Her. Many wagons will go away from the Carnaval Avenue, to take Roque Barcia Street and to flow into the North Ring Crossing in order to leave the town passing the bridge. These people will leave our town orphan for 10 days; some people will go to El Rocio on Friday in order to spend the weekend with The Virgin, and the most straggler will be there for the Virgin´s procession, which is expected to occur in the night between the 3rd and the 4th of June. Objetivo Isleño wants to wish to the pilgrims a happy road and stay in the Village of El Rocio, and to return with no novelties, as if they were ships which goes out to the Sea. Fin de semana de Cruces

Este fin de semana se celebra en Isla Cristina la popular fiesta de las Cruces de Mayo, que va adquiriendo importancia en el calendario de actividades de nuestro pueblo. Ya se ha dado el pistoletazo de salida a la festividad con la presentación por parte del Ayuntamiento de dicha festividad. El Viernes (mañana) saldrán por la mañana las escuelas infantiles para realizar un encuentro en el recinto ferial "Nuestra Señora del Carmen" a partir de las 11:00 de la mañana. Seguidamente, tendrá lugar el sábado 19 de Mayo, a partir de las 16:30 una concentración de cruces de Mayo, que también tendrá como protagonistas a los niños. El lugar de concentración será el del Paseo de las Palmeras (vea nuestro apartado sobre este paseo en "Sitios que Visitar"), para despues procesionar por el Paseo de Chocolate, Paseo de los Reyes y la Calle del Carmen, para terminar en nuestro Paseo de las Flores. Finalmente, y para amenizar los prolegómenos del comienzo del camino al Rocío, tendrá lugar en el Teatro Municipal Horacio Noguera, a partir de las 20:00 horas, un espectáculo musical a cargo de la Banda Municipal Isleña, en colaboración con el Ayuntamiento y algunos coros flamencos y grupos de baile de la ciudad, bajo la denominación de "Camino del Rocío". Vemos como Isla Cristina provee de entretenimiento tanto a sus habitantes como al turismo en general, con actividades dedicadas a las más arraigadas tradiciones de nuestra Andalucía. Para no perdérselo.

This weekend we celebrate in Isla Cristina the traditional fiesta of "Las Cruces de Mayo", which is growing in importance in the calendar of activities in our town. The starting point has already been set  with a presentation of this festivity by the Local Council. Nursery schools will come out on Friday the 18th of May (tomorrow) in order to carry out a meeting in the exhibition site of "Nuestra Señora del Carmen" from 11:00 in the morning. After this, a gathering of "Cruces de Mayo" will be held on saturday the 19th of May in the afternoon, from 16:30 onwards, which also takes into account children as protagonists. The gathering will take place in the "Paseo de las Palmeras" (see our chapter about "Places to Visit"), and they will do a processional parade from this boulevard, going through "Paseo de Chocolate", "Paseo de los Reyes" y Carmen Street, to end up in the "Paseo de las Flores. Finally, and to entertain the preface to the beginning of the road to "El Rocío", a musical show will be carried out  in the Horacio Noguera Local Theater at 20:00 in the afternoon, by the local music band and some flamenco choruses and flamenco dance groups, under the name of "Camino del Rocío". We may see how Isla Cristina gives entertainment either its inhabitants and tourism in general, with activities dedicated to the most rooted traditions of Andalusia. Don´t miss it!

Primera Ola de Calor / First heat wave

A pesar de encontrarnos aún en el mes de Mayo, ya hemos podido contemplar como visitantes y lugareños disfrutan de unos calurosos días en las inmediaciones de nuestras playas, en las que han podido refrescarse y degustar platos típicos de nuestra tierra. Las temperaturas se han elevado a niveles propios del periodo estival, llegando a cotas realmente asfixiantes (39º C ayer Lunes). Pero la incomparable situación de Isla Cristina ha favorecido la disminución de este calor por medio de la acción del mar y su brisa, que hacen de las noches un período espléndido para salir y tomar un refrigerio, a la par que ayuda a conciliar el sueño después de un largo día disfrutando de las maravillosas playas de nuestro pueblo, de arena blanca y fina, y de aguas cristalinas y lo suficientemente frías como para combatir tan tremendo calor. Ya pueden seguir viniendo olas de calor, que en este marco incomparable de Isla Cristina sabemos cómo paliar este contratiempo.

Despite being still in the month of May, we have already been able to see how visitants and inhabitants enjoy these hot days in the immediacies of our beaches, in which they have been able to refresh and taste the typical dishes of our town. Temperatures have risen to levels characteristic to the summer period, approaching suffocating levels (39º C yesterday, Monday). But the incomparable situation of Isla Cristina have favoured the decreasing of this heat by means of the action of the sea and its breeze, which make nights a splendid time to go out and take a snack, and at the same time it helps us conciliate sleep after a long day enjoying the wonderful beaches in our town, of white and fine grained sand, and of crystal clear water, which are cold enough to fight against so tremendous heat. Keep coming, heat waves! We know how to remedy these setbacks om this incomparable environment.

Feria de la Tapa

El Ayuntamiento ha anunciado la próxima celebración en el Recinto Ferial del Carmen de la primera Feria de la Tapa en Isla Cristina. Este acto es un intento de reunir las principales ofertas gastronómicas que nuestros bares y restaurantes pueden ofrecer en sus establecimientos. Es por ello que nos hacemos eco de la noticia, con la intención de convocar tanto a hosteleros como clientes, para que coincidan en esta reunión a que se celebrará entre los días 8 y 10 de Junio en nuestro pueblo.                    
The Council of Isla Cristina has announced the next celebration in our exhibition site the First Fair of appetizers in the town. This exhibition is a try to meet the main gastronomic offers that our bars and restaurants may offer in their establishments. That´s why we reproduce this event, with the intention to call for customers and inkeepers, in order for them to coincide in this meeting that will be held from the 8th to the 10th of June in our town.

Nuevo cierre de Hotel Oasis, ahora en Isla Cristina

Un folleto en el limpiaparabrisas del coche ha encendido la luz de alarma en mi cabeza. El cierre del Hotel Oasis de Isla Cristina no hace más que confirmar los malos augurios que se presentan en el más inmediato futuro del sector turístico en nuesto pueblo. Después del cambio de jefes del Hotel Palace (que no es más que el cierre y reapertura por otra empresa), este cese de actividad significa más paro y menos turismo. Independientemente de la mayor o menor rentabilidad de la cadena de hoteles Oasis (recordemos que ya cerraron su establecimiento en Islantilla, por supuestas desavenencias con la comunidad de vecinos en la que se encuentra ubicado), el cierre implica que el sector turístico que se desarrolla en nuestro pueblo debería tomar nota y hacer examen de conciencia, ya que el cierre de un establecimiento significa la falta de clientes, los cuales dejan de venir por la falta de interés en una zona que adolece de una infraestructura acorde con el nivel y la cantidad de establecimientos hoteleros que existe en Isla Cristina y alrededores, que sólo ofrece como alternativa a las playas pequeñas muestras de actividades llevadas a cabo por el Ayuntamiento, sin la diversificación empresarial necesaria para ofrecer diferentes líneas de ocio para el turismo, tanto nacional como internacional. Es por ello que el cierre se antoja profético, y pueden seguirle otros si no lo remediamos de alguna manera, incentivando la apertura de negocios enfocados al turismo que proporcionen otra forma de ocio al que estamos acostumbrados en nuestro pueblo (playas, chiringuitos y bares), diversificando la oferta y eliminando la temporalidad del sector, proporcionando al turista una amplia gama de posibilidades a la hora de elegir dónde invertir su tiempo de ocio, y hacer posible que vuelva otro año.

A leaflet in the moving wipers of my car have shed a red alert in my head. The closure of the Oasis Hotel of Isla Cristina only goes to show the bad omen that are presented in the most immediate future of the touristic frame in our town. After the money change of hands of the Palace Hotel (that is, the closure and the reopening by another company), this cessation of business means more unemployment and less tourism. Independently from the more or less profitability of this chain of hotels (It must be said that they already close their store in Islantilla, due to supposed disagreements with the surrounding community of neighbours in which is set), the closure implies that that the tourist industry developed in our town would have to take notes and to examine our consciences, so the closure of a store means the lack of customers, who give up coming here due to the lack of interest in an area that have serious faults in infrastructures appropriate to the level and the quantity and quality of hotels in Isla Cristina and its surroundings, which can only offer small samples of different activities carried out by the Council, as alternatives to the beaches, without diversification of entrepreneurship needed to offer different lines of leisure times for tourism, national and international. That´s why the closure is somehow prophetic, and some other may follow if we do not put remedy on this in some way, by encouraging the opening of stores focusing on touristic activities that gives the tourist other ways of sparing their leisure time to the ones we are accustomed to in our town (beaches, chiringuitos and restaurants), diversifying the supply and eliminating temporary work of the industry, offering the tourists a broad range of possibilities in their choice of where they invest their spare time, and make possible to return one more time.

Parte del Imperio Romano/Part of the Roman Empire

Es una posibilidad en ciernes. Después de los hallazgos consecutivos durante los últimos años, la más que posible fundación de una ciudad romana en los alrededores de Isla Cristina cobra vida. Hace algo más de dos años se encontró junto al cruce de La Redondela unos enterramientos que presuponían un pequeño asentamiento romano, tanto en duración, como en tamaño. Pero en los últimos meses se han detectado en la ría Carreras restos de columnas romanas de un más que posible tamaño grandioso, lo que revierte en la otrora existencia de un templo importante en esta zona dedicado a un dios romano, y con ello una ciudad importante en el suroeste de la Península. No debemos olvidar que esta zona se encontraba en los límites geográficos del mundo conocido para los romanos, que veían en la zona occidental de la península un terreno propicio para establecer colonias e incitar al intelecto a divagar sobre posibles utopías, como la ya conocida Atlantis, que situaban cerca de nuestro Golfo de Cádiz.

It is a real possibility. After consecutive discoveries in the last years, the most possible foundation of a Roman settlement in the surroundings of Isla Cristina comes to life. Some more than two years ago, A tiny discovery of a Roman burial was found near the crossroad of La Redondela, which presupposed a Roman settlement, little in time, and in size. But, in the last months some Roman remains have been detected in the River Carreras, in the form of pieces of amphora and columns of a more than possible great size, which suggests the existence  of an important temple in this area dedicated to a Roman God in the Southwest of the Peninsula. We cannot obviate that this area was immersed in the geographic borders of the known world for the Romans, who saw this occidental area a conducive place to establish their colonies and to incite their intellect to think about utopian places, as the already know of the Atlantis, which they placed near our Gulf of Cadiz.

Este es mi pueblo

Isla Cristina se encuentra en el suroeste de la provincia de Huelva, a unos 7 km de la frontera portuguesa. Sus orígenes se remontan a la fundación de una colonia pesquera por catalanes y valencianos, y tras el terremoto de Lisboa de 1755, creció hasta obtener su propio ayuntamiento en 1833 y absorber después al antiguo municipio de La Redondela en 1887.

Es un municipio en el que predominan las actividades pesqueras, agrícolas y turísticas, favorecidas por un clima inigualable, un mar generoso y unas playas de ensueño. Su lonja es la primera por subastas de pescado fresco de Andalucía y la segunda por tonelaje.
Destaca por eventos de alta envergadura como el Festival Coral del Atlántico, en Octubre, la Feria del Mar, festividades religiosas como la Semana Santa, las celebraciones en honor a la Virgen del Carmen y el Rosario, así como su carnaval, uno de los más antiguos e importantes de España. Sus gentes son amistosas, risueñas y magnánimas, y su mezcla de laboriosidad y rigurosidad en el trabajo junto a la actitud festiva y ocurrente hacen de la población isleña un producto autóctono sin parangón.

Las marismas de Isla Cristina cuentan con una importante colonia de aves, entre las que se pueden destacar flamencos, gaviotas, correlimos, cigüeñas, etc. También sus dunas esconden tesoros en forma de jara y pinares, con camaleones caminando por sus ramajes. Y el mar, qué decir de un mar cristalino que ofrece riqueza al pueblo, en forma de salina y pescado, largamente explotados en forma de factorías de salazón y conserva.

Isla Cristina es, en una palabra, un paraíso: goza de todos los privilegios posibles en un entorno favorable y rico en recursos.


Isla Cristina is placed in the Southwest of the province of Huelva, 5 mile from the Portuguese border. Its origins are rooted in the foundation of a fishing colony by Catalans and Valencians, and after the earthquake of Lisbon in 1755, grew until the obtaining its own council in 1833 and the absorbing of the ancient municipality of La Redondela in 1887.
It is a municipality in which activities of fishery, agriculture and tourism predominates, favored by a unique climate, a generous sea and changeling beaches. Its fish market is the first in auctions of fresh fish from Andalusia, and the second in tonnage. 
It is enhanced by high magnitude of its events, as the Atlantic Choral Festival, in October, the Sea Fair, religious feasts as Eastern, its festivities in honor of the "Virgen del Carmen" and "Virgen del Rosario", and its carnivals, which are one of the most ancient and important in Spain. Its people are friendly, smiling and magnanimous, and their mixture of diligence and severity in working with their festive and witty attitudes makes this population a special product without comparison.
Isla Cristina Marshes account for an important colony of birds, among we may highlight flamingos, seagulls, and storks. Its dunes hide some treasures in the form of rock-roses and pinewoods, with chameleons runing among their branches. And the sea, what can be said about a brilliant sea that offers wealth to the town, in the form of salt marshes and fish, broadly cultivated with factories of salted meat and canning industries.
Isla Cristina is, in a word, a paradise: it enjoys every possible privileges in a favorable environment and wealthy sources
